The plot of The Marriage-Hater Match'd may thus be given: Sir Philip Freewit and his friend Sir Solomon Subtle are friendly rivals for a lady's hand. She chooses Sir Solomon. He dies in a short time, and, because of Sir Philip's generosity in their rivalry (Sir Philip had suggested that the lady choose between them after each had courted her"), wills both his property and his-wife to Sir Philip. Lady Subtle, however, will have nothing to do with Sir Philip, on account of her discovery of his intrigue with Phoebe. This had indeed been the reason for her choosing Sir Solomon rather than Sir Philip. Lady Subtle withholds from Sir Philip some part of Sir Solomon's estate which Sir Philip cannot prove had been bequeathed to him. To obtain the writings necessary to prove his right to this property (which is an estate left Sir Solomon by an uncle in Hamburg), Sir Philip enlists Phoebe, who, disguised as a man under the name of Lovewell, is admitted into Lady Subtle's family.
