Do you appreciate that, in those days, when this college was prosperous, was turning out strong men, this work which I humbly represent to-night was in its very beginning? It was in 1867 that Vassar College, the first fully endowed college for women in America, --though there were efforts enough, and strong efforts, too, at that, and notably at Oberlin--do you appreciate, that it was in 1867, that Vassar's first class was graduated, and they numbered only four? And, next month, you will have to add two hundred and twenty to that number to sum up the graduating class of that single college. And it is only one of a large number of women's colleges, to say nothing of the general opening of the colleges of America to women since that day. Do you know that there are some forty thousand women studying in the colleges of America to-day, nearly one-third of the entire college constituency of the country? Now this is a revelation in educational annals. It is one of the great startling facts of the last half century, and it means something to this country and to the world. I am not here to speak of what it means. I am rather inclined to remind you that, forty years ago, men were challenging the entire movement.
